Chorus Aviation announces agreements to acquire six ATR 72-600 aircraft on lease to Flybe and Virgin Australia


HALIFAX, April 24, 2017 /CNW/ – Chorus Aviation Inc. (‘Chorus’) (TSX: CHR) announced today agreements by Chorus Aviation Capital’s subsidiaries to acquire six ATR 72-600 aircraft with attached leases from Avation PLC.    Three of these aircraft are currently on lease to U.K. carrier, Flybe, and three to Virgin Australia Airlines.    The aircraft are between one and four years old and are the first ATRs added to Chorus Aviation Capital’s growing regional aircraft fleet.
Commenting on the planned purchase, Chorus Aviation Capital’s President, Steven Ridolfi, said, “We are delighted to announce this portfolio acquisition, adding two outstanding customers to our growing pool of airline lessees, and welcoming the addition of the first ATRs to our diversifying fleet.”
Joe Randell, President and Chief Executive Officer, Chorus, said, “This investment further demonstrates the targeted expansion and growth strategy for Chorus into regional aircraft leasing. We are building a leading global regional aircraft lessor and look forward to announcing additional opportunities in the months ahead.”
The aggregate purchase price for the aircraft is consistent with current market values for similar aircraft, and Chorus Aviation Capital intends to finance the purchase utilizing a combination of debt financing and cash with a leverage ratio of between three and four to one.    The transactions are expected to close by the end of June 2017 and are subject to customary conditions precedent to closing, including novation of the existing leases and receipt of debt financing.




Elite Airways eyes Canada, Bahamas flights in mid-2Q17


Elite Airways (7Q) Portland ME) has announced plans to begin scheduled international passenger flights to Canada and the Bahamas during the second quarter of the year.
In its application to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for exemption and designation to provide foreign scheduled flights ferrying persons, property, and mail, the Maine-based carrier said it aimed to start a 3x weekly return service to Bimini Int’l,  the Bahamas, from each of Neward and Melbourne FL beginning in May this year.   It also plans to offer a 2x weekly return service between Halifax and Portland ME.    All services are to be on-board Elite’s 70-seater CRJ-700s.
Elite is currently licensed to conduct scheduled interstate operations.    Aside from a fleet of five CRJ-700s, it also operates one CRJ-100 and six CRJ-200s on regular flights connecting Newark with Vero Beach and Melbourne with Islip, Portland, and Sarasota/Bradenton.

Nordica to add two Bombardier CRJ900s

Estonian national carrier Nordica is to add two Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets to its fleet.   The Tallinn-based airline currently operates a fleet of six CRJ900s and two CRJ700s.
The Baltic nation’s state-owned Transpordi Varahaldus (TVH) transport sector investment and holding company will issue €25 million ($26.8 million) worth of bonds with a maturity period of eight years to buy the aircraft and lease them to Nordica.   The bonds will be bought equally by two Estonian entities, LHV pension funds and LHV Bank.
“We are convinced that Nordica … is being reasonably built up,” said the head of LHV pension funds Andres Viisemann.   “Any major steps are taken only if there is reasonable reassurance that it is economically beneficial and improves the position of Nordica and Estonian aviation alike.
“The pension funds would certainly like to be involved in more transactions like this.    We earn income for the clients of our pension funds, but do it in a manner that also benefits Estonian society.”   Nordica is expanding both its own operations and those in support of strategic partner LOT Polish Airlines.
Nordica and LOT began a cooperation in November 2016 that includes a joint commercial platform and ticket sales system, as well as a codeshare arrangement.   One of the new aircraft will operate on Nordica’s own route network, while the other will start serving passengers on LOT services, Nordica CFO Ahto Pärl said.
Pärl added that one of the new aircraft would replace a smaller CRJ700, with the smaller aircraft stationed in Tallinn as a spare.    “Nordica’s fleet and volume of flights have increased to the limit where having its own spare aircraft is economically reasonable.    This will improve the quality and stability of our service even further, and help us save money,” he said.
“The level of trust in Estonian aviation has reached a new level today,” Pärl added.    “We have believed from the very beginning that we’re moving in the right direction and this transaction proves that our strategy is working.”
The first aircraft will arrive in Tallinn in June and the second in July.    Both will start operating in early August.   The two new aircraft are 2011 models and are similar to the models Nordica already owns.

Greyhound Adds Stop At Toronto Pearson International Airport

WestJet Pilots Seek ALPA Representation

WASHINGTON, April 20, 2017 /CNW/ – WestJet pilots filed membership cards today with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to hold an election for representation by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA).
“WestJet pilots told us they are ready for a certified union,” said ALPA president Capt. Tim Canoll. “Now is the time for them to take the next step and vote for ALPA in order to obtain the resources available to secure their goals.”
In the next few weeks, the CIRB will verify the membership cards and schedule an ALPA representation vote.    ALPA expects that the secret-ballot election will be conducted in May.

FLYHT Signs USD $1.9 Million Sales Contract with Chinese Airline

Calgary, Alberta – April 20, 2017 – FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd.  is pleased to announce the sale of the Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRSTM) to a new commercial airline customer in the People’s Republic of China.   “FLYHT is excited to announce its latest customer in China, this airline is very interested in our technology to support their operations,” commented Michael Fang, FLYHT’s Vice President China Sales.    “Members of FLYHT’s executive team met with several current and prospective customers in the region last week where we are seeing steady demand for our solutions to meet airlines’ satellite communications and data needs.”
The initial contract for the sale of AFIRS hardware is valued at approximately USD $1.9 million assuming FLYHT provides the hardware over the full term of the five (5) year agreement. FLYHT’s data services may be added in the future, further increasing the value of the contract.
FLYHT has all the necessary Supplemental Type Certificates (STC’s) to complete installation on the designated A320 aircraft within this contract.    Installations are anticipated to begin in the third quarter of 2017.

Ground Run-up Enclosure Officially Opens at Billy Bishop Airport

Innovative facility only the second of its kind in Canada and will serve as an important part of the Noise Management Program to reduce the impact of noise on the surrounding community

TORONTO, April 19, 2017 /CNW/ – Earlier today PortsToronto officially opened its Ground Run-up Enclosure (GRE) at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (Billy Bishop Airport) with The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport in attendance.   The three-sided, open-top facility will accommodate commercial aircraft at the airport and is designed to dampen the noise associated with high-power aircraft engine ground run-up operations.    Standing 14m in height, the 63m by 66m enclosure is located on the south-west side of the airfield and is only the second of its kind in Canada.
The addition of the GRE facility represents a key new component in the airport’s Noise Mitigation Program as the acoustically and aerodynamically designed facility, constructed by Blast Deflectors Inc. (BDI), will dampen the impact of ground engine run-ups that are mandated by Transport Canada following engine maintenance to ensure safety.    These engine run-ups have been cited by the community as a primary source of noise prompting Ports Toronto to commence construction of the facility in fall 2016.    The GRE was constructed at a cost of $9 million – paid for by Ports Toronto and not taxpayers – and will significantly reduce the acoustic impact of engine run-ups on the surrounding community.    The enclosure effectively absorbs noise with specialized acoustic panels that line the interior of the three walls which feature vents for optimal aerodynamic performance.
“Aircraft noise is a complicated issue faced by airports and communities, one that must be managed while ensuring that aviation safety remains paramount.    As our cities grow and airports become a part of our neighborhoods, it’s important that we work together to ensure a balance between the important economic role that airports play, with the well-being of our communities. This project at Billy Bishop Airport is a great example of the federal government working closely with the municipal government and the airport authority to achieve this balance while making a positive difference to the neighbourhood,” indicated the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport.
“The proximity and convenience that makes Billy Bishop Airport such an asset also comes with a responsibility to be a good neighbour,” said Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong.    “I congratulate Billy Bishop Airport on its noise management program and applaud Ports Toronto for making this significant financial investment – at no cost to the taxpayer – in order to reduce noise and minimize disruption in what has become a thriving neighbourhood.”

The GRE’s completion marks another major milestone in the Billy Bishop Airport Airfield Project, a three-year rehabilitation initiative currently underway at Billy Bishop Airport to modernize the airport and ensure it continues to serve as an economic engine for the city and provide efficient service to the 2.7 million passengers who travel through the airport each year.

WestJet announces intent to launch ultra-low-cost carrier


CALGARY, April 20, 2017 /CNW/ – WestJet today announced its intention to launch a new, ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) in Canada subject to agreement with its pilots and any required regulatory approvals.    Service is expected to start in late 2017 with an initial fleet of 10 high-density Boeing 737-800s designed by the airline that first brought low-cost air travel to Canada in 1996.  The ULCC will provide Canadians with no-frills, lower-cost travel options.

WestJet reports March load factor of 84.1 per cent

Airline increases traffic by 8.7 per cent, flies a record 2.0 million guests for the month of March

CALGARY, April 13, 2017 /CNW/ – WestJet today announced March 2017 traffic results with a load factor of 84.1 per cent, an increase of 0.9 percentage points year over year.    Revenue passenger miles (RPMs), or traffic, increased 8.7 per cent year-over-year, and capacity, measured in available seat miles (ASMs), grew 7.4 per cent over the same period.    The airline flew a record 5.7 million guests in the first quarter, a year-over-year increase of 6.8 per cent or approximately 363,000 additional guests.
“We continue to be pleased with our strong traffic growth as a record number of guests chose to fly with us in the first quarter,” said WestJet President and CEO Gregg Saretsky.  “My thanks go out to all WestJetters for their dedication to providing our growing number of guests with a safe and remarkable travel experience.”

WestJet announces new EVP and CIO


CALGARY, April 10, 2017 /CNW/ – WestJet today announced that Craig Maccubbin has been named Executive Vice-President and Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Craig will join WestJet in Calgary effective April 24, 2017 pending immigration approval.

U S Navy Super Hornet Strike Fighter Joining London Forces

AIRSHOW LONDON (ASL) has unveiled its latest performer – the US Navy F/A -18 Super Hornet Strike Fighter.  The big news came as part of a morning event packed with major milestones. Mayor Matt Brown was first to the podium to declare top shelf status for AIRSHOW LONDON.    The performer roster now places AIRSHOW LONDON in the number one position as Canada’s largest military demonstration of air power for 2017.  The Mayor congratulated the team for pushing the envelope and showcasing London and southwestern Ontario’s established and expanding aviation and defence industry sectors.     He said, “The AIRSHOW LONDON is back and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.    An incredible team of volunteers, has worked tirelessly to make this a world class event, drawing some of the biggest and best attractions to London.   Thanks to them, we can all look forward to taking in the best Airshow in Canada later this year.”
Gerry Vanderhoek, ASL Flight Operations Director, underscored the magnitude of the scheduled appearance of the US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet Strike Fighter in the skies over London.     He detailed this newest model’s high capabilities across the full mission spectrum: air superiority, fighter escort, reconnaissance, aerial refueling, close air support, air defense suppression and day/night precision strike.   He said, “The Super Hornet is a stand out and will be sharing London’s airspace with the US Air Force F-35A Lightning ll.     Airshow fans, or even aviation experts, rarely have the opportunity to see these two aircraft together. AIRSHOW LONDON’s line up is stellar across the board or as we prefer to say AWESOME.”
The addition of the two premier US fighters to earlier confirmations by the RCAF- CF-18 Hornet and the Snowbirds delivers standout power and spectacle to the show.   The Canadian demon-stration teams  are paying tribute to the 150 CELEBRATIONS and the new maple leaf red of the CF-18 was unveiled just this week.    Vanderhoek added, “The CF-18 is absolutely stunning – standing still or at supersonic speeds and we’re honoured they chose to be here.”
Vanderhoek spiced up the anticipation by adding an international flavor to the event indicating recent official announcements by the Australian and Turkish Air Forces put them both at AIRSHOW LONDON.    The Turkish Air Force used a video post on social media to profile their calendar and KANADA is prominently featured.

 Tianjin, April 7, 2017 – Bombardier Business Aircraft in collaboration with its partner the Tianjin Airport Economic Area (TAEA) are pleased to announce the opening of a state-of-the-art Service Centre in Tianjin, China.    An inauguration event was held on April 7, 2017, ahead of the Asian Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (ABACE), to officially open the Service Centre. The facility uses the same processes and procedures that govern Bombardier’s worldwide network of Service Centres.
Located near Beijing, the Tianjin Service Centre includes hangar space, offices, as well as back shop areas totaling over 8,500 square meters (95,766 square feet).    It offers maintenance, repair, overhaul, and associated activities and services, and complements the Bombardier Business Aircraft Support Network in Asia.

This major investment, made in collaboration with TAEA, demonstrates Bombardier’s commitment to strengthen its presence in China, as well as its confidence in the future of the aviation industry in the region,” said Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Vice President and General Manager, Customer Experience, Bombardier Business Aircraft.

To date, the Tianjin Service Centre has received its Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) certification for Global, Challenger 604, Challenger 605‎ and Challenger 850 aircraft, giving it full authority and ability to perform 96-month inspections for Challenger 600 series jets, and 120-month inspections for Global aircraft.    Further certifications and international capabilities will be announced in the upcoming months.
As part of Bombardier Business Aircraft’s commitment to operators in Asia, the new maintenance facility will further strengthen Bombardier’s customer support network in China, which includes a team of Field Service Representatives and Customer Support Account Managers, as well as four Authorized Service Facilities.

F. LIST CANADA opening production facility in Greater Montréal – Aircraft cabin specialist targets 100 jobs by 2020


MONTRÉAL, April 7, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ – F. LIST CANADA CORP., a subsidiary of F. LIST GMBH, a global manufacturer of high-class interiors for business and private jets in Austria, will set-up in the Greater Montréal area by opening a new production facility by the end of 2017.   This investment of more than $20 million is expected to create 100 jobs by the year 2020.
“This state-of-the-art facility will bring us closer to our main customers in North America, resulting in shorter production lead-times, faster deliveries and greater flexibility,” says Michael Groiss, Chief Executive Officer of F. LIST, based in Thomasberg, Lower Austria.    “It will also enable us to provide better on-site support for innovative products delivered from our Austrian plant, while bolstering our aftermarket services for business and executive jets.”
The new production plant, which will initially employ 15 specialists, will also house offices, a showroom and a veneer selection area as part of its designation as F. LIST’s Veneer Competence Centre for flame retardant wood veneers, key components of its interior finishing business.
