DHC-2 Beaver Featured in Canada Post’s “Canadians in Flight” Series

SIDNEY, BC, Oct. 13, 2022 /CNW/ – Today at Viking Air Limited’s facilities in Sidney, British Columbia, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (“De Havilland Canada”) owner Sherry Brydson and Canada Post representatives unveiled a new Canada Post stamp celebrating the DHC-2 Beaver’s contribution to Canadian aviation. The DHC-2 Beaver is one of five achievements featured in Canada Post’s new “Canadians in Flight” series.

The Beaver is considered the best bush plane ever built and was named one of Canada’s top 10 engineering achievements of the 20th century. The all-metal plane’s short takeoff and landing capability – along with its ability to be fitted with wheels, floats or skis – made the Beaver ideal for accessing and connecting remote areas of the country.

The new stamps will be available at postal outlets across Canada starting Monday, October 17, with pre-sales beginning today at www.canadapost.ca.

Some key facts about the DHC-2 Beaver:

  • De Havilland Canada began designing the DHC-2 Beaver in 1946; company engineers surveyed bush pilots from remote communities of Northern Canada and several countries on what mattered most to them in a new aircraft.
  • Pilots requested a rugged and reliable all-metal aircraft capable of carrying a half-tonne payload with good takeoff, landing and climb performance; as well, an aircraft that could operate year-round on wheels, floats or skis from isolated outposts, and exposed to climatic conditions ranging from the blazing sun to sub-zero cold, ice, and snow.
  • The first DHC-2 Beaver flew from the runway at Toronto’s Downsview Airport on August 16, 1947, 75 years ago this summer. De Havilland Canada produced a total of 1,692 DHC-2 Beavers over the aircraft’s 20-year production period.
  • The DHC-2T MK III Turbo Beaver – a turboprop variant – was first flown on December 30, 1963. 60 of these aircraft were produced between 1963 and 1968.
  • In 1983, De Havilland Canada awarded Viking Air Limited the contract to build spare parts for the DHC-2 Beaver and DHC-2 MK III Turbo Beaver; as well, many of the engineering drawings and production tooling for these parts were transferred to the Sidney, British Columbia company.
  • In 1987, the Canadian Engineering Centennial Board named the DHC-2 Beaver one of the top ten Canadian engineering achievements of the 20th century.

De Havilland Canada Announces Site of New Alberta Aircraft Manufacturing Facility

CALGARY, AB, Sept. 21, 2022 /CNW/ – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited has announced that the site of its new aircraft manufacturing facility will be in Wheatland County, Alberta, approximately 30 minutes east of Calgary.

This new facility will be called De Havilland Field and will consist of a new, state-of-the-art aircraft assembly facility, runway, parts manufacturing and distribution centres and maintenance repair and overhaul centre. In addition, educational space for training the workforce of the future is planned as well as general office buildings and a De Havilland Canada aircraft museum.

These operations will complement our current parts manufacturing facilities in Victoria, British Columbia as well as our new engineering and customer support centre of excellence in Toronto, Ontario.

De Havilland Field will be the site of final assembly for the DHC-515 Firefighter aircraft which was launched earlier this year, the DHC-6 Twin Otter as well as the Dash 8-400 aircraft.  We are currently working towards bringing the DHC-6 Twin Otter and Dash 8-400 aircraft back into production.

The location of De Havilland Field is ideal, having access to a large, young and diverse labour pool in Alberta, family-friendly cost of living, and a world-class international airport that can support efficient parts distribution to our global customer base.  We anticipate that once in full operation, there will be up to 1500 jobs located at De Havilland Field.

The development of De Havilland Field is subject to an amendment to the Wheatland County Area Structure Plan as well as re-zoning by the County.  De Havilland expects to submit these applications shortly and is committed to working with Wheatland County and Wheatland County residents as we move through the Area Structure Plan and re-zoning processes.  In addition, there are approval processes required by Transport Canada and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada. Where is the site of the proposed facility?

The proposed site is between Range Roads 264 and 265 and south of the Trans-Canada Highway in Wheatland County, Alberta. 

How big is the site?

We have acquired approximately 1500 acres in the area.

When will you submit your rezoning applications?

We anticipate submitting our application to amend the Area Structure Plan and begin the re-zoning process later this week.

When do you expect to start construction?

We hope to start construction shortly after the Area Structure Plan has been amended and the sites have been re-zoned which could be as early as late 2023.

When will De Havilland Field be finished?

The full build-out of De Havilland Field will take many years and will be dependent, in part, on the growth trajectory of the company.  Under a conservative scenario, we would anticipate an approximate ten-to-fifteen year construction schedule for the entire campus.  However, in the short term, we would expect that the first buildings could be operational by 2025.

How many construction jobs will be created?

At this point it is difficult to say with any accuracy how many construction jobs will be created but we expect that several hundred workers will be required in 2024 to ensure the campus is built per our aircraft demand.

What will you do while De Havilland Field is being built?

De Havilland Canada currently has production facilities in Calgary that are able to produce Twin Otters and a number of DHC-515 Firefighter aircraft per year.  As production needs grow, we will need to move production to De Havilland Field.

When will aircraft assembly start?

If our Area Structure Plan application and re-zoning are approved within the expected timeframe and construction goes well, we could see aircraft production begin as early as 2025.

When will the Twin Otter resume production?

We are currently undertaking a significant review of the DHC-6 Twin Otter to ensure our product is meeting market demand.  We expect this review to be complete by the end of the year at which point we will be able to make a decision with respect to future Twin Otter production.

When do you expect the Dash 8-400 to resume production?

The aviation industry was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.  It appears that air travel demand is rebounding which is putting grounded aircraft back into service.  Once we have completed our review of the DHC-6 Twin Otter, we will begin our Dash 8 review to determine a path to resuming production.

Are you worried about attracting employees/staff?

Like all employers, De Havilland Canada is facing stiff competition for skilled talent.  We are putting in place recruitment and attraction strategies to make sure that we have the skills we need to build our aircraft and serve our customers.  Currently, we are working with the government of Alberta to ensure the skills we need are being developed in educational institutions in the province.

Will the Head Office be at De Havilland Field?

Yes.  We expect that the De Havilland Canada Head Office will be located at De Havilland Field.

Will the Twin Otter Simulator move to De Havilland Field?

No.  The Twin Otter simulator that is currently located near the Calgary International Airport will remain in its current location due to the difficulty in moving the electronics and equipment contained within the simulator.

De Havilland Component Solutions Program Gains Momentum with Agreements Signed by Customers in Asia and Europe

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 21, 2022 – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (“De Havilland Canada”) today announced increasing momentum in its De Havilland Component Solutions Program (“DCS Program”) with agreements signed by Air Niugini Limited and flybe Limited. Under the agreements, De Havilland Canada will manage component maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the airlines’ Dash 8-400 aircraft. The DCS Program will also provide access to De Havilland Canada’s strategically located exchange pool.

Air Niugini, Papua New Guinea’s national airline, signed a five-year DCS agreement to support up to five Dash 8-400 aircraft. Air Niugini serves 23 domestic points plus nine international routes in Asia, Oceania and Australia. Established in April 2021, flybe Limited will operate throughout the United Kingdom and European Union. The airline’s five-year DCS agreement will support a fleet of up to 32 Dash 8-400 aircraft.

De Havilland Canada Increasing Operational Flexibility of Dash 8-400 Aircraft with Design Weight Increases and Cabin Enhancements

Cabin enhancements include industry-first OEM collaboration with SpaceX’s Starlink to enable high speed, low latency broadband internet on De Havilland Canada’s aircraft.

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 19, 2022 – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (“De Havilland Canada”) today announced design weight increases and cabin enhancements for the Dash 8-400 aircraft.

“As we work toward relaunching the production of the Dash 8-400 aircraft, our design weight increases and cabin enhancements, which are available to retrofit in-service aircraft, illustrate De Havilland Canada’s ongoing commitment and investments to support the worldwide fleet,” said Jean-Philippe Côté, Vice President, Programs, De Havilland Canada. “Our solutions offer our operators many opportunities to increase operational flexibility and to provide a passenger experience that is equivalent to that on new production aircraft. In addition, our design weight increases for the Dash 8-400 aircraft will allow operators to meet the increasing passenger weight allowance requirements mandated by Transport Canada, the FAA and various other aviation authorities, without any impact on revenue.”

DESIGN WEIGHT INCREASES

The design weight increases will provide an increase of up to 3,000 lb (1,360 kg) in payload (maximum zero fuel weight) and an increase of up to 2,000 lb (907 kg) to the maximum take-off weight of the Dash 8-400 aircraft. These weight increases significantly enhance the operational capability of the aircraft to carry more passengers, more bags, more cargo, and more fuel, and provide more range than ever before. The weight increases are offered in multiple standard categories and De Havilland Canada can also provide customized weight increases to meet the specific needs of a particular operator. The increased fuel tankering capability offers operators options to refuel at points of the network that provide greater operational flexibility and cost optimization.

In addition, an increase of 650 lb (295 kg) is being developed to the aft baggage compartment for operators who require additional baggage weight carrying capability.

CABIN ENHANCEMENTS

When the Dash 8-400 entered service, its advanced design provided more payload, more passenger capacity, and more range than competing turboprops. The aircraft incorporated several unique, market-leading features, such as the Active Noise and Vibration Suppression (ANVS) system to ensure passengers enjoy a quieter cabin. Additionally, the aircraft’s HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which is standard on all Dash 8-400 aircraft, ensures that cabin air is refreshed 100% every three to four minutes. Since entry into service, updates have been made to the cabin, including LED lighting, new window design, enlarged overhead bins, and more.

De Havilland Canada is again investing in the Dash 8-400 aircraft and is introducing a series of new features to further enhance passenger appeal with more functionality and flexibility. These features include:

  • Satellite-based Internet Connectivity from Starlink enables high speed, low latency broadband internet worldwide, providing passengers with a premier internet experience not available from any other satellite or air-to-ground system. The Starlink antenna’s lightweight and aerodynamic form factor enable a more sustainable operation with fuel savings not capable with other legacy systems. De Havilland Canada’s work with Starlink to integrate satellite-based, in-flight Wi-Fi on an aircraft platform is the first agreement between Starlink and any OEM and highlights De Havilland Canada’s customer focus and agility as an organization.
  • Wireless In-flight Entertainment (IFE) System that provides passengers with wireless access to a wide variety of content on their personal electronic devices. The single-line replaceable unit that can be installed in the overhead bins, offers reduced weight and maintenance compared to a seat-back IFE solution. The unit can be powered by batteries or by aircraft power.
  • USB In-Seat Power at all passenger seat locations. The system, which does not impact passenger legroom, is compatible with any seat type and will ensure passengers can easily connect and power their personal devices while onboard.
  • An Overhead Bin Extension Solution for earlier models of Dash 8-400 aircraft. This cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solution provides additional stowage volume in the Dash 8 aircraft’s cabin and is the perfect solution to meet growing passenger requirements for more baggage space.
  • Pictorial illuminated signage that aligns with signage in airport facilities and facilitates the remarketing of aircraft by eliminating the need for signage translations.
  • Upgraded interior décor that includes soft materials in the cabin (carpets, dado panels, bulkheads, seat dress covers etc.)

De Havilland Canada Launches Cargo Conversion Solutions Utilizing Dash 8-400 Aircraft

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 18, 2022 – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (“De Havilland Canada”) today announced the launch of three cargo conversion solutions for the Dash 8-400 aircraft. The launched solutions include Quick Change (QC), Package Freighter (PF) and Freighter with Large Cargo Door (F-LCD) configurations to address a wide variety of operational business models. Known worldwide for its low cost of operation, exceptional performance and reliability in airline and special mission operations, the Dash 8-400 aircraft’s rugged design also positions it exceedingly well for cargo operations.

Dash 8-400 Quick Change (Dash 8-400 QC)

The Quick Change solution is a revenue expansion model that offers flexibility to convert the Dash 8-400 aircraft between all-passenger and all-cargo configurations. Operators can combine two distinctive income streams into one, significantly expanding their revenue base. The short time required to switch from one configuration to the other allows operators to match market dynamics swiftly. By installing a new smoke detection system in the cabin to convert it into a Class E compartment, no attendants are required in the cabin for cargo flights.

Dash 8-400 Package Freighter (Dash 8-400 PF)

The Dash 8-400 Package Freighter allows bulk loading of various sizes of cargo, such as e-commerce packages. There are nine distinct loading zones with eight radial spider nets providing tie-down and restraint functions. The primary cargo access door is in the same position as the aft LHS baggage compartment door in all Dash 8-400 aircraft, and there are four additional access doors (one at the front and one at the back on each side of the aircraft) to facilitate quick loading and unloading of cargo. It is ideal for the transportation of e-commerce packages. An optional cargo loading system is also available for palletized cargo.

Dash 8-400 Freighter with Large Cargo Door (Dash 8-400 F-LCD)

The Dash 8-400 Package Freighter can be equipped with a large cargo door (LCD) and a cargo loading system to provide a containerized cargo model that facilitates the transport of unit load device (ULD) pallets or containers. With the LCD measuring 109 in x 69 in (2.8 m x 1.8 m), the Dash 8-400 F-LCD is equipped to handle typical containers such as LD1, LD2, LD3 and LD4. For example, it can carry as many as eight LD3 containers. This would allow interline transfer of containers from other aircraft in an operator’s network. It is ideal for hub-and-spoke network carriers as well as major logistics operators.

Impressed by the sight of the 10 iconic De Havilland aircraft departing Downsview on Saturday June 11, some of us knew that one De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (DHC) airframe remained at the airport.

Today (Friday June 17), it departed for Calgary via Winnipeg. The aircraft was the prototype Dash 8-400 (C-FJJA, serial number 4001) that first flew on January 31, 1998. 632 additional examples were produced before the line was shut down.

With its departure, not one DHC aircraft exists at that storied airfield.

Just before the Dash 8-400 departed, a new Bombardier Global 6500 returned from a test flight.
At least there will still be Globals operating at YZD for another year before that production facility is transferred to Toronto Pearson.

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Farewell Event at Toronto Downsview Airport

On June 11th, 2022, a private event was organized at Downsview Airport (CYZD) in Toronto, Canada, just a short hop east of Toronto Pearson Int’l (CYYZ). The event marked the farewell of de Havilland Canada’s 94 year presence at Downsview Airport as the airport itself is due to be redeveloped for residential land and commercial purposes in the next few years. Employees pastand present as well as close media were invited to attend.

An assortment of de Havilland aircraft were invited for static display. These included the de Havilland Canada Tiger Moth, DHC-1,2,3,4,6,7 and 8 ( no -5 as all of them were retired in early 2022).

After the event ended early Saturday afternoon, a special departure parade of all invited aircraft was organized. The order started with the Tiger Moth and went DHC 1,2,3,4,6,7 and 8. Each aircraft took off, made one pass over the field and continued onwards towards their destination.

De Havilland Canada Announces Successful First Flight of CL-415 with Collins Pro Line Fusion® Avionics Upgrade Program

CALGARY, AB, June 1, 2022 /CNW/ – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (“De Havilland Canada”) is pleased to announce the successful first flight of the Avionics Upgrade Program for CL-215T, CL-415 and CL-415 EAF aircraft occurred on May 30, 2022, in Abbotsford, British Columbia.  The new avionics package integrates a state-of-the-art Collins Aerospace Pro Line Fusion® flight deck that is proven and in use by civilian and special mission aircraft around the world.

“We are extremely excited about the successful test flight of the Collins Pro Line Fusion® flight deck in a CL-415 aircraft,” said Jean-Philippe Côté, Vice-President Programs, De Havilland Canada.  “We are looking forward to Transport Canada certification in the coming months and beginning the installation of new avionics suites on the CL-215T, CL-415 and CL-415 EAF flight decks shortly thereafter.”

This new avionics suite has been purposely designed and customized for the aerial firefighting missions. It will also be installed in the recently launched DHC-515 Firefighter aircraft. With Collins Pro Line Fusion® flight decks installed in CL-215T, CL-415, the CL-415 EAF and DHC-515 Firefighters, customers will be able to have crews move seamlessly between aircraft as they will have a common cockpit experience across their fleet.

magniX Announces Milestone in NASA Program to Accelerate Electric Flight Technologies for Commercial Aviation – Dash 7 from Air Tindi

EVERETT, Wash., April 28, 2022 /CNW/ — magniX, a manufacturer of electric propulsion systems for aircraft, today announced two key industry partners, AeroTEC and Air Tindi, for its NASA Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project. Through magniX the NASA program aims to demonstrate electric propulsion technology to power a hybrid De Havilland Canada Dash 7 aircraft, with first flight planned for 2025.

Air Tindi, a commercial operator from Yellowknife, Canadian Northwest Territories, will provide the aircraft. AeroTEC of Seattle, Washington, USA is a leader in integrating electric propulsion on airplanes, and will design, modify, and flight-test the demonstrator aircraft at its Flight Test Centre at Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington.

The retrofitted DHC-7 aircraft will be powered by two PT6 engines and two magniX magni650 electric propulsion units (EPUs). The distributed propulsion system is designed to reduce operating costs and noise while increasing power efficiency. The prototype has the potential to accelerate the introduction of hybrid electric flight technologies for commercial aviation.

Advancing Electric Flight

NASA is accelerating the learnings of the integrator and providing valuable data and insights to the industry from a certification, regulatory and planning aerospace perspective. NASA’s prior research and knowledge on electrification will be “operationalized” through this demonstration. The demonstration flight is part of a multi-year program, after NASA awarded magniX $74.3 million in 2021 to rapidly advance Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (EAP) technologies through ground and flight-testing demonstrations over five years. magniX will also collaborate with other NASA projects on EAP development, flight test instrumentation and data analysis.

“The EPFD project provides an exciting collaboration with industry partners to advance electrified aircraft propulsion in order to expedite the use of hybrid electric systems for commercial air-travel,” said Lee Noble, NASA’s Director of Integrated Aviation Systems Program. “Introducing these innovative electric propulsion technologies for existing and next-generation aircraft will help meet the aviation community’s future sustainability goals.”
