Bombardier reports its third quarter 2021 results, demonstrates solid execution and strong cash flow performance

  • Business aircraft revenues of $1.4 billion, up 17% year-over-year, mainly driven by an improved delivery mix and continued strong aftermarket recovery as overall fleet flight hours surpass 2019 levels.
  • Adjusted EBITDA(1) of $142 million (9.8% adjusted EBITDA margin(1)), representing a year-over-year improvement of $58 million or 69% reflecting continued progress on the Global 7500 aircraft’s learning curve, cost structure improvements and an improved delivery mix. MONTREAL, Oct. 28, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bombardier (TSX: BBD.B) announced today its financial results for the third quarter of 2021. The company is pleased with continued execution on its strategic initiatives, cash flow generation and order momentum driving the financial results of the quarter. Bombardier also highlighted that during the third quarter, the company redeemed debt maturities through December 2024, a major milestone in its deleveraging plan.

Third Quarter 2021 Financial Performance

Business jet revenues of $1.4 billion are up 17% year-over-year, propelled mainly by an improved delivery mix, with higher deliveries of large aircraft. The company has also seen an increase of revenues by $76 million from business aircraft services. This is mainly due to increased fleet flight hours having now surpassed 2019 levels, a clear signal that the industry is on a strong recovery path from the global shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Confidence levels within the industry are at a new all-time high, indicative of the rising vaccination levels and eased travel restrictions. In the U.S., business jet utilization increased by 42.5%, year-over-year for the first eight months of the year. In Europe, business jet utilization increased by 27.1% year-over-year in the first nine months of the year.

Bombardier reported an adjusted EBITDA of $142 million, representing a year-over-year improvement of $58 million or 69%. The company attributes this to an improved aircraft mix, continued progress on Global 7500 aircraft learning curve, and cost structure improvements. Reported EBIT from continuing operations for the quarter was $48 million.

For the second consecutive quarter, the company is seeing an improved free cash flow (FCF) generation. FCF of $100 million from continuing operations represents an improvement of $747 million year-over-year. The positive result is mainly due to stronger order intake and better payment terms on new orders. Reported cash flows from operating activities – continuing operations for the quarter was $156 million, and net additions to PP&E and intangible assets – continuing operations for the quarter were $56 million.

Major Milestone Achieved with the Clearing of Debt Maturities Through December 2024

The Corporation reported a total debt reduction of approximately $3 billion since the beginning of 2021, and cleared, through redemption or refinancing, debt maturities through December 2024. This represents a major milestone in one of Bombardier’s key priorities this year, as it creates a runway to focus on its operations and stabilizes the need for liquidity. Pro-forma liquidity remains strong at $1.9 billion.

Successful launch of the Challenger 3500

As the third quarter wrapped up, the company introduced a major update to its bestselling Challenger 350 platform, the Challenger 3500. The new aircraft represents a culmination of a period of important product development that saw Bombardier introduce innovative technologies and industry-leading new products and services.

With a redesigned interior that includes Bombardier’s patented Nuage seat as part of the aircraft’s standard configuration and the industry’s first voice-controlled cabin, the new Challenger 3500 further elevates the cabin experience to meet the increasing customer expectations. Flair Airlines grows schedule 33% in Canada and the U.S. with four new aircraft

  • Service will launch in Spring 2022 to San Francisco, Nashville, and Denver in the U.S., between Toronto and Victoria and to Comox, B.C., in Canada

Edmonton, Alberta, Oct. 19, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Flair Airlines, Canada’s only independent ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), continues its unprecedented growth with the deployment of four brand new 737 MAX aircraft in April and May 2022. Two additional aircraft will be added to Flair’s Toronto base, bringing the total there to five.  A second aircraft will be added to Flair’s Edmonton base and a third aircraft to its Vancouver base. Flair’s Spring 2022 schedule will expand from twelve aircraft to sixteen, delivering 33% schedule growth.

A whopping 14 new routes will be added, including service to four fantastic new destinations. Three new cities will be added to Flair’s network in the US, allowing Canadians to finally travel affordably to San Francisco, Nashville, and Denver.  Flair will also launch Comox as a second gateway to Vancouver Island, complementing existing service to Victoria and allowing visitors to explore even more of the island.

Flair is adding new 737 MAX aircraft as it strives to achieve the lowest cost per seat mile of any Canadian airline. The aircraft deliver fuel savings and reduce the airline’s CO2 emissions by 14%. Lower per passenger emissions are a vital step in lowering Flair’s carbon footprint as it works to become Canada’s greenest and most sustainable airline.

Toronto Pearson Base Grows to 5 Aircraft

The addition of two aircraft based in Toronto will grow Flair’s footprint to five aircraft. Flair will be providing low fares on nonstop flights to 19 destinations from Toronto Pearson Airport.

The spring addition of routes to Nashville, San Francisco, Comox, Regina, Montreal, Winnipeg and Saskatoon will join the nonstop flights Flair currently provides to 7 domestic destinations from Edmonton.

Air Canada To Resume Service And Increase Capacity To Key Destinations in South America

  • Montreal to São Paulo restarts; increases to daily flights from Toronto

MONTREAL, Oct. 14, 2021 /CNW/ – Air Canada today announced an increase in service to several key South American destinations as the airline continues to rebuild its global network from its Toronto and Montreal hubs. Service to São Paulo, Brazil will resume from Montreal on December 8 with four flights per week on a year-round basis, while service from Toronto to Brazil’s financial centre will increase to daily flights as of December 6. São Paulo will be served by Air Canada’s flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Service from Montreal to Bogotá, Colombia is set to resume on December 2 with three weekly flights, while flights from Toronto to Bogotá will increase to four per week as of November 7, all operated on an Airbus A330-300. Flights to Bogotá will allow customers to easily connect onward throughout Colombia and other South American destinations via Star Alliance partner Avianca.

Air Canada also remains committed to serving Buenos Aires, Argentina, with flights offered to either Toronto or Montreal via São Paulo. The flights to Argentina, which has announced plans to reopen to international tourists as of November 1, are still pending government approval.

Another key South American destination will rejoin Air Canada’s network in January 2022 with the resumption of service between Toronto and Santiago, Chile, with three weekly flights.

Air Canada Expands Capacity from Eastern Canada to India; Launches New Non-Stop Service from Montreal to Delhi

Starting October 31, just in time for Diwali celebrations, Air Canada will offer three flights per week to the growing Indian community in Montreal. Additionally, the airline is increasing frequency to Delhi from Toronto to ten flights per week beginning Oct. 15. It offers customers the option of a full refund to the original form of payment, an Air Canada Travel Voucher or the equivalent value in Aeroplan Points with a 65% bonus should the airline cancel or reschedule a flight by more than three hours.

International Services

Air Canada’s international services include wide-body aircraft featuring choices of Air Canada Signature Class with lie-flat seating, Premium Economy and Economy Class. Flight service is steadily ramping up at Saint John Airport since its reopening three months ago, with Porter Airlines set to return this week and Flair Airlines planning to expand its flight roster.

The airport, which saw all commercial flights cancelled in December amid pandemic travel restrictions, welcomed their return on June 29 with an Air Canada flight from Montreal.

Since then, acting CEO Greg Hierlihy said Monday, business has been brisk — driven almost entirely by leisure travel and the pent-up demand from individuals separated from loved ones — and is poised to get brisker.

On Wednesday, Porter Airlines flights return to Saint John, with afternoon service to Ottawa and on to Toronto.

“They are all set to go … six days a week to Ottawa and then on to [Toronto’s] Billy Bishop airport on Toronto Island,” Hierlihy said. Flights leave at 3:25 p.m. every day, with the exception of Saturdays.

And Flair Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier that chose Saint John as its only New Brunswick destination, is planning to expand its current two-day-a-week service to Toronto to three days a week in March of next year.

Those plans have been propelled by strong uptake on their flights, which now run Wednesday and Saturday. That’s changing to Tuesday and Saturday in November, and then to Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday next year, Hierlihy said.

“The uptake has been very good on that flight,” he said.

“We had several times during the month of August where it was sold out or virtually sold out. And we’re talking about, you know, a 189-seat jet.”

Even after Labour Day, when kids go back to school and family travel cools a bit, uptake has remained relatively strong.

“There’s been a bit of a decrease, but it still remained quite steady,” he said. “They’re really good numbers. So we’re we’re quite enthusiastic … about the possibilities there.”

Overall, he said, it’s an encouraging rebound after six punishing months.

As of August, business at the airport is “at about 35 per cent of where we were” in August 2019, and indications so far are that that will increase to 50 per cent by the end of the year, Hierlihy said.

“If you’d asked me a few months ago, would I be happy with those numbers, I would have said yes, absolutely. It’s the start of the recovery.”

The return of business travel, which won’t likely happen until sometime in 2022, will provide another vital boost.

“We know that business travel is still very low at this point in time, so we’re waiting for that to bounce back,” Hierlihy said.

“That’s when you’ll really see our numbers come up.”

COVID-19 travel tests will be available at YSJ

As travel increases, so will the demand for COVID-19 tests for passengers required to show proof of a negative test upon arrival at their destination.

Within the coming weeks, Hierlihy said, that service will be available at the Saint John Airport.

The airport has signed a lease contract with Distribution Ad Valorem, which currently offers the fee-for-service tests at the Moncton and Fredericton airports.

The company offers three testing options, including rapid antigen tests and the standard PCR tests, at a cost of between $149 and $299, depending on the type of test. The cost includes the provision of a certificate confirming date and time of testing, test result and passport number.

Hierlihy said the airport has taken several calls from travellers wondering where they can take the COVID-19 tests needed to comply with travel requirements.

“It’s hard to find that service in Saint John,” he said. “So we worked quickly to see if we could accommodate that in the airport.”

Hierlihy stressed that the tests are only for asymptomatic travellers, and must be prebooked online via the website of the airport offering the service.

Three New Air Cargo Warehouses in Canada

On 1 October, Swissport opened a new air cargo warehouse at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, the third new cargo location in Canada in under half a year. With cargo volumes on the rise, the company is anticipating continuing growth in the segment. Just recently, new facilities have also opened at Montréal–Mirabel International Airport and Edmonton International Airport.

On 1 October, Swissport opened a new air cargo warehouse at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, its sixth cargo location in Canada and the third new Canadian warehouse in under half a year. With the new 370 sqm facility, Swissport complements its local offering in Passenger Services with Air Cargo Handling and continues to deliver on its ambitions in the Canadian air cargo market. In comparison with 2019, the company’s volumes in Canada are up 35%, underlining the need for increased warehousing and logistics capacity.

At Edmonton International, the existing full range of Passenger Services is supplemented by a new 1,000 sqm air cargo warehouse with options for a further expansion. The additional capacity contributes to Swissport’s focus on cargo growth in the region.

Earlier this month, Toronto’s central Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport re-opened for the first time to travellers since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the airport’s primary commercial carriers, Porter Airlines, resumed domestic services.

The airport – which I’ve previously called one of the world’s most convenient – is unique due to its location and size. Its complete commercial closure was also a rarity on an international level – though given the length of the pandemic, Porter’s decision to shut down services completely (not just at this airport) proved a sound decision.

My flight out of Billy Bishop Airport on opening weekend though was the sole Air Canada route out of the terminal, YTZ to YUL (Montreal, Quebec).

The flight to Montreal was an easy affair – just minutes through security, with no notable differences to the experience pre-pandemic. Surprisingly no vaccination checks, and no temperature check (as I recently experienced on a trip to Vancouver) – though sanitisation stations are everywhere as are mask reminders – the latter being a feature both in the lounge and on board Air Canada’s Bombardier Q400.

The departures terminal – which no longer features complimentary snacks and drinks as it did once upon a time – had a Balzac Coffee shop and a Newsagency open for the 10am flight post security, and a bar would open later in the day. There’s ample, comfortable seating in the lounge, and plenty of room for social distancing.

With small capacity flights and limited services at present, it’s a great time to fly – the airport was very quiet. It’s also worth mentioning that Domestic and International travellers are separated both through the security process and in at the gates themselves.

Domestically, I believe this is the only service where Air Canada will provide alcoholic beverages free of charge, to match the service offered by Porter on the same route. They’ll make you a Caesar, serve beer or wine, or a number of other spirits – plus tea, coffee, soft drinks and juices. I daresay the wonderful staff go so far as to encourage the Caesar at 10am, which I was not complaining about.

They also provide Miss Vickies Potato Chips or Kit Kat Chocolates amongst a small selection of complimentary snacks. A packet of sanitizer and masks are also handed out as you board – something they’re doing across all their routes. The flight was on time, and a wonderful experience.

My return flight with Porter Airlines was actually their first returning to the Quebec City (YQB) – Billy Bishop (YTZ) route. Quebec City is about three hours out of Montreal, and a wonderful city to visit whenever you get the chance. The flight from Billy Bishop to Montreal is a little over an hour, while to Quebec City it’s closer to 90 minutes.

At Quebec City Airport, we were greeted to an almost empty airport as well, and the flight, which had only resumed service that day, was almost empty as well. Staff were fantastic though, and I felt very looked after. Seats are comfortable, but don’t recline on the De Havilland Dash 8-400, which like Air Canada’s Bombardier Q400 operates in a 2-2 layout throughout the whole cabin.

Shortly after take off, wine, beer and soft drinks were served, with chips, almonds or cookies. I enjoyed a lovely red wine. Unlike with Air Canada, no masks or sanitizer were handed out on the Porter flight, though I’m sure they would have given you some if you’d asked. And to top it all off: the flight arrived well ahead of schedule.

Something worth mentioning with Porter, is that if you want to have a carry on (something that doesn’t fit under the seat in front of you), make sure you pay for that when you buy the ticket – it gets more expensive in the leadup to the flight. Air Canada include this with your ticket, but Porter do not.

No vaccination checks were made on either flight, or at either airport, which was confusing given the recent federal mandates. It left me wondering if it’s a staggered arrangement with airlines and terminals, or if some just haven’t gotten their act together in time? Given how important these mandates are on restoring consumer confidence in a country that has an almost 85% vaccination rate, here’s hoping they figure that out.

Final Verdict

Comparing these two airlines is a tough one, as the service was nearly identical. Air Canada slightly outshined Porter thanks to the complimentary spirits, but don’t expect that on any other Air Canada flight. Where as beer and wine are a given on all Porter routes. The inclusion of carry on baggage in your ticket also gives Air Canada a point over Porter – but the prices remain comparable all the same.

The service from both airlines was professional, friendly and the experience was a comfortable one from start to finish. It helped that the airports were both exceptionally quiet as well – meaning it was a breeze at all points of the experience. Not something to expect at all times, of course.

I would highly recommend flying on either airline in or out of Billy Bishop – if you can avoid the madness of Toronto’s primary airport (Pearson, YYZ), you absolutely should.

International flights to and from the USA resume for Porter have also resumed this month, and once again Billy Bishop will serve as the preferred entry point (over the crowded Pearson) for visitors crossing the North American border (which recently re-opened to non-essential travel. So definitely check out Porter Airline’s website for all their routes.

The only confusion really was over Vaccinations. For all this talk of Quebec & Canadian vaccination requisites, I didn’t get checked at Toronto City nor Quebec City Airport, nor by Porter or Air Canada. I do wonder how this process will develop over time – after all, the current plan is to require all domestic travellers are vaccinated. But after this trip, it’s hard to know exactly how this is currently being implemented.

All Airbus: Air Canada Rouge Goes Full Narrowbody

Air Canada Rouge, the lower-cost subsidiary and leisure airline of the Canadian flag carrier, took to the skies again in September. With the B767-300ER gone, its 39-strong fleet is now exclusively Airbus. They’re used on 60 routes until the end of the year as it rebuilds its network.

Air Canada Rouge has resumed flying

Air Canada Rouge relaunched with an initial three routes from Toronto: Las Vegas, Orlando, and Regina, in the distant province of Saskatchewan. These were joined by Toronto to Cancun and Tampa a few days later, with all five routes using 200-seat A321ceos.

These were its first flights since February, with the seven-month grounding due to Canada’s non-essential travel ban and the suspension of all flights to the Caribbean and Mexico – two of its essential markets – at the request of the Canadian government. Rouge’s resumption coincided with Canada reopening its borders on September 7th to fully vaccinated foreigners.

Now exclusively Airbus

Rouge’s fleet is now entirely narrowbody, ch-aviation.com shows, with 20 A319s, 14 A321s, and just five A320s. This follows the retirement of its B767-300ERs, of which it had 25 at one point.

Its 767s were, of course, mainly used long-haul, including across Europe and South America, and the type’s routes had an average of 2,378 miles, OAG indicates. At 5,063 miles, Toronto-Athens was its longest-ever 767 route, but Toronto to Las Vegas had the most flights.

Currently, five aircraft are active

According to Planespotters.net and confirmed by Flightradar24, only five of its 39-strong fleet – some 13% – is currently active, all A321s. Its A321 fleet has an average age of just 6.1 years, far younger than its A319s (23.5 years; to be retired) and A320s (14.2 years). The younger A321s were delivered directly to Air Canada Rouge.

No widebodies go hand-in-hand with Rouge previously saying that it’ll concentrate on routes within narrowbody range. Air Canada will instead operate suitably good-performing long-haul routes – many have already switched – in a rejigging of networks and focusing on relative strengths.

One of many examples is Toronto to Edinburgh, which was by Rouge’s 767s and from 2022 will instead be by its parent’s Boeing 737 MAX 8s from June 1st. It’ll compete directly with WestJet. Another: Toronto to Bogota, in Rouge’s hands from 2016, is now by Air Canada’s B787s and A330-300s.

What’s the plan to the end of the year?

Between September 20th and December 31st, Rouge has scheduled 60 routes. Thirty-nine of these are to/from Toronto, with most of the rest from Montreal. With over 2,700 outbound flights planned, the domestic market has almost four in ten departures, comprising eight routes from Toronto.

Toronto to Québec City has the most flights

Some 13 international countries will welcome Rouge’s flights, with the US the most-served, followed by Cuba, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and the Cayman Islands. Toronto to Miami has the most international flights, as shown below, although the 456-mile domestic link from Toronto to Québec City (YQB) is the most-served, with 28 weekly departures from November.
